At Kansas State University (K-State) we address the design, analysis and control of processes, and associated hazards curriculum ABET requirement extensively through a multi-pronged approach during the students’ senior year. Our approach includes one process safety course, one controls course, two design courses and a partnership with Cargill, Inc that provides every design team with an industrial process safety coach in addition to their design project mentor. Students complete three separate design projects over the course of the year which are evaluated using the same rubric, allowing for clear assessment of our outcomes. We will discuss the impact on student performance and modifications we have made since these changes were first implemented in 2018.
