(160r) Hydrolyzed Collagen Hydrogels Development for Cosmetic Applications

Hydrolyzed collagen, which comprises of small peptides from the hydrolysis of collagen, has been used in cosmetics and personal care products, such as hair preparations and skin care products, makeup, shampoos and bath products [1], etc. We are developing four kinds of collagen hydrogels for cosmetic applications, including collagen and sodium alginate hydrogel, collagen and chitosan hydrogel, collagen and gelatin hydrogel, and collagen and agar hydrogel. Different parameters for hydrogel formation were investigated, such as pH effect, temperature effect, and drying conditions: air dry, freeze dry, heating. The hydrogels were evaluated their applications in cosmetics: water retaining, anti-bacteria, and wrinkle removal. This project was partially funded by NIH Project Number 1R41DK123949-01 [2].
