A BA graduate in Natural Sciences, and doctoral graduate in developmental neurobiology, Davies runs an interdisciplinary lab that operates across embryology, pharmacology, synthetic biology, and tissue engineering. The lab's interest in synthetic morphology and patterning dates back to a 2008 paper in which they sketched the potential field, and they have since tried to flesh-out the sketch by producing several systems to drive development-like behaviours in mammalian multicellular systems. As a lab head, Davies' main specialties are herding cats, improvising semi-lethal bits of lab equipment, and avoiding the Dean.
