NEW YORK – The Society for Biological Engineering (SBE) of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) are partnering to host the 4th International Conference on Stem Cell Engineering, which will be held from March 16 to 19, 2014 at the Coronado Island Marriott in Coronado, California.

The meeting, which brings together engineers, biologists, and clinicians who are working on cellular therapies, is designed to accelerate progress in this increasingly important area of research. The goal of this accelerated effort is the generation of cells to advance tissue regeneration and other stem-cell-based therapies.

Keynote speakers include Deepak Srivastava, the Younger family director and senior investigator at the Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease and director of the Roddenbery Stem Cell Center at Gladstone; Linda Griffith, the School of Engineering Teaching Innovation Professor of Biological Engineering at MIT; Philippe Menasche, professor of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Paris Descartes; and Sean Palecek, founder of the Palecek lab at the University of Madison-Wisconsin. The conference, which is being co-chaired by Todd McDevitt of the Georgia Institute of Technology and Ron McKay of the Lieber Institute for Brain Development, will cover strategies in:

  • Extracellular Programming & Reprogramming
  • Intracellular Programming & Reprogramming
  • Imaging
  • Stem Cell Tissue Engineering & Morphogenesis
  • Regenerative Therapies
  • Bioprocessing and Biomanufacturing Strategies
  • Microtechnologies & High Throughput Screening
  • Computational Stem Cell Biology

Additional presenters include:

  • Taby Ahsan, Tulane University
  • Ihor Lemischka, Mt. Sinai Medical Center
  • David Scadden, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University
  • David Schaffer, University of California, Berkeley
  • Jim Wells, University of Cincinnati
  • Steven George, UC Irvine
  • Peter Zandstra, University of Toronto

About SBE:

Established in 2004, the Society for Biological Engineering is a technological community for engineers and applied scientists integrating biology with engineering. Members of SBE come from a broad spectrum of industries and disciplines and share in SBE’s mission of realizing the benefits of bioprocessing, biomedical and biomolecular applications. http://bio.aiche.org.

About AIChE:

AIChE is a professional society of nearly 45,000 chemical engineers in 100 countries.  Its members work in corporations, universities and government using their knowledge of chemical processes to develop safe and useful products for the benefit of society.

Through its varied programs, AIChE continues to be a focal point for information exchange on the frontier of chemical engineering research in such areas as energy, sustainability, biological and environmental engineering, nanotechnology, and chemical plant safety and security. www.aiche.org.

About ISSCR:

The International Society for Stem Cell Research is an independent, nonprofit membership organization established to promote and foster the exchange and dissemination of information and ideas relating to stem cells, to encourage the general field of research involving stem cells and to promote professional and public education in all areas of stem cell research and application. http://www.isscr.org/
