The SBE awards Chaitan Khosla the 2011 James E. Bailey Award, endowed by Cytos Biotechnology. Khosla s work in bioorganic and biophysical chemistry at Stanford University has addressed polyketide biosynthesis for the harnessing of new pharmaceutically relevant natural products which range from antibacterials to anti-tumor agents. His lab has also investigated therapeutic strategies for celiac sprue, a harmful immune disease that affects the small intestine and is induced by dietary gluten exposure. Dr. Khosla has recently begun biofuels production project with metabolically engineered E. coli. Balancing work as the head of his lab group at Stanford and the former department chair of chemical engineering, Khosla has made a significant impact in the across the field of bioengineering.
Dr. Khosla will receive this prestigious award at the AIChE Annual Meeting in Minneapolis and present a lecture titled "Natural Products and the Chemical Engineer" on Tuesday, October 18th at 6 pm.
