2011 AIChE President Dr. Maria Burka spoke about two passions of hers, research and innovation at the inaugural Virtual Local Section meeting. The first half of her talk covers three AIChE focus areas she hopes will lead to strong growth in the next few years, namely an international focus by AIChE, improvement in Government Relations, and Accreditation and Credentialing in education. The second half of her talk focuses on research and innovation starting with a list of the National Academy of Engineering's Grand Challenges She discusses some areas of research needing Chemical Engineers and shares some examples of current NSF projects which may lead to successes in these grand challenges.
