This presentation will cover the definition of a patent, types of patents, criteria used to obtain a patent, the duration of the patents, the new patent law, and disclosure issues. It will address the following questions: Would more than one patent ever be needed for one invention and should you file a provisional or non-provisional patent application? What are the main steps of the patent process, typical costs, and how long is the wait for examination? What are the typical rejections and responses to the rejections? The talk will also cover the topic of trademarks, including what a trademark is, types of trademarks, state or federal filing, the 45 classes of trademarks, and the life of a trademark. In addition, it will also explore what constitutes trade secret, when agreements are needed, licensing, and reasons for file for intellectual property protection.
