Solids processing unit operations are ubiquitous in chemical plants, yet most chemical engineers are not well equipped to deal with particle technology process problems. Consequently, as Merrow has reported and the presenter has observed over the last 25 years, solids processing equipment often is a process bottleneck resulting in a combination of lost production, decreased yield and increased costs. The field has taken on increased emphasis as both industry and academia aim to “design” particle properties in order to meet end use needs and requirements.
This webinar provides an overview to solids processing technology, and highlights some of the issues faced when dealing with bulk solids, including scale-down/scale-up, and effects of particle size. Empirical problem solving is often used with particle technology problems, however, the webinar will show that most solids processing unit operations have a firm, scientific basis. Several case studies are examined in detail, to highlight the problem solving in the area and the counterintuitive nature of some of the problems.
