CARBURIZATION IN ETHYLENE RADIANT COILS
Hugues Chasselin, tech support
Manoir industries, France
Abstract : Carburization is a phenomenon encountered in the radiant coils of ethylene furnace. This paper is a basic tutorial on what carburization consists in and how it occurs. Made for maintenance people to respond to their daily constraints, this paper is about understanding the carbon diffusion process and its aggravating factors.
It also addresses industry standards and why those standards are there (alloy selection, coil surface finish,…). Future possible mitigation options, and ways to measure (destructively and non-destructively) carburization will also be discussed.
