Sunday, June 5

6:00pm - 8:00pm
Welcome Reception

Monday, June 6

9:00am - 12:00pm
Session 1: Innovations in the Efficient Production and Use of Fossil Fuels and the Development of Renewable Energy Sources
Co-Chairs: Prof. Naoto Ohmura, Kobe University, Japan * Prof. Angelika Heinzel, Univerity of Duisburg-Essen, Germany * Dr. Joseph V. Porcelli, JVP International Inc., USA

This session focuses on the global need to reduce the production and use of fossil fuels, replacing them where technically and economically feasible by production of renewable fuels. The tasks are different for those fuels used in transportation and for those used to generate electricity, the two largest current consumers of fossil fuels.  Furthermore, there is a need to minimize carbon dioxide generation and, generally, to reduce the environmental impact of both the production and use of innovative fuels. In this session, as in subsequent technical sessions, we seek papers that present recent technological advancements and/or define future research needs. It is hoped that energy-saving, safer technologies will be discussed that can have broad applicability across the entire range of transportation fuels and power generation. Papers describing the recent advancements and/or future research needs in industry and academics are solicited.  Presenters are encouraged to focus on technical/commercial aspects related to process design, process synthesis and process/product development.

2:00pm - 5:00pm
Session 2:
Breakthroughs in the Design and Energy-Efficient Production Processes and Applications in the Electronics Industry
Co-Chairs: Dr. Hans-Juergen Albrecht, Siemens, Germany * Prof. Thomas Zerna, University of Dresden, Germany

The session focuses on the design of electronic products and technologies for energy saving and environmentally friendly application. To achieve these impacts, consequences should be analyzed, evaluated and optimized for application in the early development phases of products and processes. The session will provide an overview of existing or planned energy saving and environmental impact. Presented will be initiatives providing cost incentives for achieving energy efficiency or environmental measures. Papers will follow the trend for modern packaging technologies as well as system integration requirements with respect to lowering manufacturing cost and to increase customer benefit, environmental friendly functional materials (packages, laminates, interconnect materials), conformance with product architecture in terms of multi-functionality and high reliability customer demands. This shall include environmental, energy, current and thermal management aspects as well as thermo-mechanical stress management solutions, optimized right from the beginning of the product / system concept. To meet such challenges, new architectures will be presented and discussed.

Tuesday, June 7

9:00am - 12:00pm
Session 3:
Advancements in the Design of More Energy-Efficient Products and Production Processes in the Automotive Industry
Chair: Dr. Lixin Situ, Automotive Parts and Accessory Systems R&D Centre

This session focuses on the global need to develop more fuel-efficient vehicles, using to the greatest extent possible, renewable, sustainable fuels and advance production technology/processes that generate little or no carbon dioxide and other pollutants.  Presenters may be from automobile companies, manufacturers of advanced strong/light-weight materials used in automobile fabrication, innovative drive-system designers and producers, advance ‘green fuel’ (like bio fuel) technology researchers and producers, and developers of advanced batteries and fuel cells. Papers describing the recent advancements and/or future research needs in industry and academics are solicited. Presenters are encouraged to include energy-efficient products design and more efficient production processes in the automotive industry. Topics and presentations discussing current and future trends in globalization related to more efficient product development and production processes are welcome from the international participants.

2:00pm - 5:00pm
Session 4: Energy and Feedstock Sustainability in the Chemical, Pharmaceutical and Biotech Industry

Co-Chairs: Dr. Cawas Cooper, USA * Prof. Rafiq Gani, DTU, Denmark * Dr. Jan Lerou, USA * Dr. Vishwas Pangarkar, India

This session seeks papers from the speakers associated with the chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries in line with the conference themes of energy efficiency and effective use of resources resulting in increased safety and improved environmental solutions. Papers describing the recent advancements and/or future research needs in industry and academics are solicited.  Presenters are encouraged to focus on technical/commercial aspects related to process design, process synthesis and process/product development.  Presentations detailing new technologies such as use of alternate feedstocks or microreaction systems or conversion from batch to continuous processes will be ideal for this session and conference. Topics and presentations showing current and future direction of globalization related to more efficient process and product development are welcome from the international participants.

Wednesday, June 8

9:00am - 12:00pm
Session 5: Governmental Policies and Initiatives that can Encourage Energy Savings and Carbon Dioxide Emissions Reductions
Co-Chairs: Kurt Wagemann, DECHEMA, Germany (invited) * Maria Burka, AIChE, USA (invited)

To achieve significant increases in energy efficiency and correspondingly substantial reductions in CO2 emissions is a major societal challenge. Achievement of the required breakthroughs in new technologies and widespread utilization of these new more efficient processes and technologies in the marketplace requires the adoption of effective government policies and support mechanisms. This session will look at the current state of greenhouse gas abatement policies and explore likely future developments in the major global arenas. Potential cap and trade mechanisms such as the European Emission Trading scheme and other possible approaches such as carbon taxes, mandatory minimum energy efficiency standards, and even more novel economic or fiscal strategies will be reviewed.

2:00pm - 5:00pm
Session 6: Panel Discussion and Wrap Up
Co-Chairs: Dr. Thomas Dietrich, mikroglas, Germany and Dr. Lionel O’Young, ClearWaterBay Technology, Inc., USA

To conclude this first international conference, a select number of conference speakers will lead an open discussion of the key issues addressed during  the entire conference to better focus the observations and conclusions for inclusion in a Conference Summary or “white paper” for dissemination by AIChE and DECHEMA to decision makers and the informed public. In this session, we will endeavor to focus the technical and societal knowledge, capabilities and insights of all conference attendees upon the key findings of this conference in order to determine the necessary developments required to facilitate the wide scale introduction of more energy efficient processes. Key questions to be examined and answered will evolve from the conference presentations and discussion but could well include:
- Which financial or technical issues pose the greatest obstacles to the adoption of new technologies?
- What can organizations like AIChE and DECHEMA do to increase the awareness of key issues ?
- Is there sufficient and adequate information available to schools and universities ?  Do appropriate faculty at all levels need any special training ?
- What can governments do to better support and facilitate change to more efficient energy use?
Comments and questions, which arise during the conference or which can be communicated in advance to the chairs will be included in the panel discussion. The conference leadership and participants will always try to bear in mind the two ultimate questions.
- What needs to be done?
- How do we best go about it?
