XXIII Interamerican Congress of Chemical Engineering
2008 AIChE Annual Meeting
Background
Interamerican Congresses are held every two years and the location is decided four years in advance at a regular business meeting, which is always held during an Interamerican Congress. The four-year advance decision is normally the case, unless special circumstances arise. One of those special circumstances was brought to the official Confederation’s business meeting in Cancún, in 2002, by AIChE. A petition that the XXIII Interamerican Congress (to take place in 2008) coincide in time and place with the AIChE Centennial was brought by AIChE’s representative by Glenn Taylor. The petition was unanimously approved (six years in advance).
Specific Events
The Interamerican Confederation of Chemical Engineering (IACChE/CIIQ, CIIQ being its Spanish acronym) and AIChE jointly decided to organize a number of events co-sponsored by both organizations. These events were programmed as Topical Conference J (TJ). The details are described below.
Also, the IACChE/CIIQ Business Meeting will take place during this Congress. The Executive Board (President, Vice-President, Past-President, Secretary General, and treasurer), and one official representative of each member society are among participants of the meeting. See below for further details.
Topical Conference J
Three sessions were included in Topical J:
- TJ000 James Oldshue Lecture (Invited Paper Only)
- TJ001 Renewable and Sustainable Fuel, Products, and Processes: Practice, Science and Advances In North, Central, and South America
- TJ002 Chemical Engineering Education In North, Central, and South America: Latest Developments
Session TJ000 – Renewable and Sustainable Fuel, Products, and Processes: Practice, Science and Advances In North, Central, and South America
9:00 AM – 10:45 AM (Room TBA)
This session was designed to include the first James Y. Oldshue Lecture, a new series established jointly by the Interamerican Confederation of Chemical Engineering (IACChE/CIIQ) and AIChE; a ceremony where the IACChE’s Presidency will be transferred; and a brief presentation of the upcoming XXIV Interamerican Congress of Chemical Engineering, which will coincide with the 8th World Congress of Chemical Engineering to be held in Montreal, Canada, in August 2009. The program follows.

Session TJ001 – Renewable and Sustainable Fuel, Products, and Processes: Practice, Science and Advances In North, Central, and South America
12:30 PM – 3:00 PM (Room TBA)
Room: TBA This session will present information about fuel sources from biomass and solar radiation, including technical and commercial developments. Products that are bio-based and environmentally friendly for agriculture and pharmaceuticals are of particular interest. Chemical processes are described that allow profitable manufacture of renewable materials consistent with green engineering practice. Also covered will be opportunities for nations that have unique sources of fossil energy that can be converted to a more useful form; for example, natural gas to diesel and shale and tar sands mining and processing. These technologies are important for a significant region of the world that is in the transition stage to accelerated industrialization.
Chairs
Dr. Yinlun Huang, Session Chair Dr. Esteban A. Brignole, Session Vice-Chair
Session TJ002 – Chemical Engineering Education In North, Central, and South America: Latest Developments
3:15 PM – 5:45 PM (Room TBA)
This session will focus on the growth of chemical engineering training at universities and technical institutes in North, Central, and South American regions and the Caribbean. In recent times, the annual number of chemical engineering graduates has increased immensely. These young engineers are currently leading improvements in the chemical industry. Also, many graduates are developing careers in research in their own countries and abroad. The instruction of chemical engineers in Latin America is changing due to professors and societal demands. This dynamic area in chemical engineering has unusual expectations for the near future.
Chairs
Dr. J. Alberto Bandoni, Session Chair Dr. Pedro E. Arce, Session Vice-Chair
Further information about IACChE/CIIQ
The Interamerican Confederation of Chemical Engineering is a federation of chemical engineering societies of countries in the Americas. The Inter American Confederation was conceived in 1961, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was officially constituted in 1964, in Lima, Perú. It is one of the three federations of chemical engineering that exist around the world:
- Interamerican Confederation of Chemical Engineering
- European Federation of Chemical Engineering
- Asian Pacific Confederation of Chemical Engineering
These confederations organize the World Congresses of Chemical Engineering, which take place every four years since 2001 (previously, they took place every five years). The location rotates among the confederations.
In 2001, the World Council of Chemical Engineering (WCEC) was formed. Main WCEC constituents are the three existing continental federations (mentioned above) and key chemical engineering societies. The IACChE/CIIQ has played an active role in the WCEC, particularly since the 7th World Congress of Chemical Engineering (2005).
