Process Safety Education: Meeting ABET Requirements and Industry Needs | AIChE

Workshop Agenda

This workshop is intended for faculty members.

Workshop Description:  This one-day workshop will bring academics together with industry and academic leaders in process safety.  The lectures and exercises will demonstrate the importance of process safety in the design and operation of chemical plants, and the importance of undergraduate process safety education.

This workshop-style session will expose attendees to key process safety concepts and provide awareness of the many resources available for use. Existing, successful programs will also be reviewed.  Instructors will introduce the key concepts of process safety and discuss how they can be presented across the Chemical Engineering curriculum.  Participants will develop a strategy for incorporating safety education in their classrooms, laboratories and/or departments.

Attendees will leave this course with:

  1. A preliminary plan for implementing safety education and practice into their class, department, and/or laboratory
  2. An understanding of the need for safety education in the undergraduate curricula and university research laboratories and a motivation to implement safety in the curricula
  3. An understanding of key concepts on process safety proven methods presently in use in the undergraduate curricula, and awareness of the multiple resources for incorporation of safety education and practice in both the undergraduate curricula and the research laboratories
