Co-sponsored by the Process Development Division of AIChE, the 2010 event entitled “Energy Challenges for Process Development” is aimed at highlighting the issue of energy as it relates to chemical processes. The three-day event will be divided into five main sections.
• A National and International Overview  of Energy as it Relates to Process Development
• Energy Analysis in Chemical Processing
• Industry Case Studies
• Supply Case Studies
• The Latest in Energy Developments

The program committee led by Laurence Weatherley, University of Kansas, is in the process of securing its last few speakers and fine tuning the program content. For information on exhibits and sponsorship opportunities see Process Development Symposium Exhibitor & Sponsor Opportunities . For more immediate information or opportunities contact Jeremy Viscomi at jviscomi@ku.edu

The aim of the conference is to provide a forum for discussion of major energy issues facing the process industries in the US and internationally. These include energy security and diversity of supply, energy costs and process economics, environmental and emissions legislation, technology development, public perceptions, market opportunities, energy conservation, and the role of alternative energy and renewables. The conference will comprise contributions from invited speakers from the user sector, the supply sector, consultants, and research and development.

The first session of the conference, A National and International Overview of Energy as it Relates to Process Development, will provide an overview of the broad issues relating to energy. We expect this session to summarize the key external drivers facing the process industry sector and help define the key energy challenges for process development. We anticipate discussion and definition of priorities on strategy for development of solutions, energy technology development priorities and how best to inform policy direction.

There will be a session, Energy Analysis in Chemical Processing, dealing with energy analysis of processes and this will address some of the tools and strategies available to chemical engineers for energy management, design for energy efficiency, and energy audit systems.

The case study sessions will include Industry Case Studies, with invited speakers from industries who are significant energy users with presentations focusing on examples of good practices in energy management and the impacts of changes in energy markets and legislation on business and investment planning, and development needs. The other case study session, entitled Supply Case Studies, will feature invited speakers from the energy supply sector including the oil refining, power, and gas industries.

The closing session entitled The Latest in Energy Developments, will include speakers who are directly involved in energy R&D relevant to process development. Topics include catalysis and reaction engineering for energy efficient processes including development of alternative platforms for the fuels and chemical industry from renewable feedstocks.

We expect that attendees will immediately benefit by making use of the contacts that they make from different sectors of the energy supply chain and with those involved in research and development. It is anticipated that delegates will be able to immediately apply technical information from the conference to address their current process development challenges relating to energy.

The symposium has been scheduled for June 27th to 30th at The Lodge of the Four Seasons near The Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri.  The Lodge of the Four Seasons is known for its regional appeal and amenities that range from 54 challenging holes of championship golf to the soothing atmosphere of Spa Shiki, both recognized throughout the Midwest and beyond for their excellence. This is a lovely time of the year in the Ozarks and this Gordon style conference is designed to allow participants some free time in the middle of the day to enjoy both the conference locale as well as to connect informally with other attendees. Conference registration includes three nights lodging, essentially all meals and the resort fee. Located less than two hours from both, Lambert International Airport in St. Louis and Kansas City International Airport in Kansas City, travel to the conference site will be a snap.
