Rocky Mtn Program to Assist Student Sections (PASS) Announcement

Dear Rocky Mountain AIChE Members,

The history of our profession (and most professions) is of the current practitioners standing on the shoulders of those who have come before. This link from our past to the future is a hallmark of engineering and science and a reason to have great optimism about our future. It is also why our organization places great emphasis on instructing students and early career engineers about the technical and ethical standards and practices of our chosen profession.

In an effort to promote closer ties between our professional organization and the chemical engineers of tomorrow, the Rocky Mountain AIChE is pleased to announce a new program we are calling Program to Assist Student Sections or PASS. The program seeks to provide limited funding to support student AIChE chapters at the universities located within the Rocky Mountain Section's geographic boundaries (see list below). Beyond that, and as funding allows, program funds will be used to increase the amount of support our section currently provides budding engineers at the middle and high school levels through the Colorado State Science Fair. Our objective is to issue every dollar received in a fiscal year to one of these recipients.

The mechanics of the program are simple. A fund will be set up within the Rocky Mountain AIChE treasury for the PASS. The section will match contributions from its members (and other donors) dollar for dollar up to $1000. Student chapters who apply for a grant will be issued up to $250 from this fund to support their chapter's activities. In addition, any student chapter that elects to host a local section professional society meeting will be granted an additional $100. If there are "unclaimed" funds remaining in the program at the end of March, they will be added to the section's annual support for the middle and high school Colorado State Science fair awards given out in April. The program will kick off this month, with a goal of contributing all the matching funds by the end February 2016.

And here is where we need your support. We ask each member to reflect on the importance of our professional society linking to future members, and to decide how best to support to this effort. Most of us can think of a seasoned engineer who was instrumental in our professional growth while at university or early in our careers, and it is those types of links we are trying to catalyze through the PASS. Any contribution is valuable to this effort, whether it is $10 or $1,000.

Thank you again for all your support!
