Overpressure due to reaction has resulted in some of the worst process safety events in the chemical industry (e.g. Bhopal).  The purpose of this presentation is to describe how to properly recognize and mitigate reaction hazards by sharing several examples.

Scott Tipler joined The Dow Chemical Company in 1985 after completing a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Michigan Technological University.  Over his 30+ year career, he has served in many manufacturing and engineering roles, including Global Process Engineering Technology Leader for the engineering polymers, films, and SARANTM technology center.  He is a recognized within the Dow Chemical Company for his in-depth knowledge in process engineering design and in particular, the areas of process safety and pressure relief design.  He has been a leader in the development and update to a number of Dow’s Loss Prevention Principles (LPP) and serves as a leader of Dow’s Eastern Reactive Chemistry Process Hazard Assessment (RCPHA) team, a member of the Midwest RCPHA team, and as an Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) process safety auditor.

Since 2007, Scott has served as Overpressure Protection Expertise Area Leader within The Dow Chemical Company’s Engineering Solutions Technology Center, where he leads a team of reactive and non-reactive pressure relief design subject matter experts.  He also leads the overpressure protection technology resource network (TRN) which is responsible for the development of most effective technology that is aligned with industry standards and practices.  He is an active member of the AIChE Design Institute for Emergency Relief Systems (DIERS) consortium and has published several articles in the area of over pressure protection in AIChE’s Chemical Engineering Progress and AIChE’s Process Safety Progress.  Currently he is working with members from Shell, Exxon Mobil, API, and AFPM to benchmark reactivity hazard evaluation procedures. Scott was recently recognized as the 2016 Chemical Engineer of the Year by the Mid-Michigan AIChE section.

Free and open to the public
