Opportunities for Young Professionals in Fuels & Petrochemicals Division

This month, we sat down with Tim Olsen, past chair for the Fuels & Petrochemicals Division and current CTOC liaison for YP to discuss opportunities for young professionals in this Division.

Tell us a little about your Division?

AIChE's Fuels and Petrochemicals Division was established to further the application of chemical engineering principles in the fields of fuels and petrochemicals. The division provides a forum for information exchange and coordination of activities with those of other societies in the field. The division also coordinates activities through its own Ethylene Producers Subcommittee. Each year, the Fuels and Petrochemicals Division sponsors some 350 papers in nearly 70 technical sessions at AIChE meetings, relating to the production, refining, utilization, and conversion of liquid, solid, and gaseous fuels and petrochemicals.

What benefits have you received from becoming a member of this Division?

Benefits of being a member of Fuels & Petrochemicals Division include:

§  Network with peers in the industry, academia, and government

§  Opportunities to be active with the organization

§  Learn, and stay informed about industry challenges and direction

§  Advance your career

§  Opportunities for mentorship

§  Access to members only section including presentations

§  Three newsletters distributed throughout the year, including the opportunity to contribute to the content

What opportunities are available for members to get involved? What is a good way for Young Professional Members to get started?

One of easiest opportunities to get involved is by first being a co-chair on a session related to your experience or role within your organization.  Co-chair then allows the opportunity for session chair and nomination to run for Director (officer of the division).  Once a session chair, many opportunities are available including programming chair, secretary, treasurer, and overall division chair.

When does this Division hold events or meetings?

Fuels and Petrochemicals division communicates every other month via conference call and two face-to-face meetings the Sunday prior to the Spring and Annual meetings.  For those participating on committees, there may be a few additional conference calls throughout the year to ensure progress on the committee objectives.

How does someone become a member?

Students can join F&PD for free, and then others are just $10 per year.   http://www.aiche.org/fpd

Who can I contact with any questions or to get more involved?

The Fuels and Petrochemicals Division wanted to make sure communication channels were made easy despite annual changes in leadership, therefore we have standard e-mail addresses no matter who is leading the division.  Contact the current division chair at chair@aiche-fpd.org, also the past chair is another good source at pastchair@aiche-fpd.org
