Gupta received a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering in 1967 from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. As a top student in his class, he was given a fellowship to study management science at Cornell University in the United States, earning his M.S. in 1969. After graduating, he took a job in Philadelphia with the Scott Paper Company and enrolled in night school at Drexel University's LeBow College of Business. He completed his M.B.A. in finance and marketing in 1972.
Raj is currently serving as a Senior Advisor at New Mountain Capital as well as serving as the Chairman of the Board at Avantor.
