Environmental Division Undergraduate Student Paper Award

A plaque and $300, $200, and $100 for first, second and third place, respectively

PresentationThe award is presented at a designated function of the Environmental Division at either the AIChE Spring National Meeting or at the AIChE Annual Meeting.
Nomination Instructions

Selection criteria include:

  1. The nominee must be a full-time undergraduate in good standing at a college or university with an accredited program in chemical engineering, and must be a member of an AIChE Student Chapter.
  2. The work must be performed during the student's undergraduate enrollment, and the paper must be submitted prior to or within six months of graduation.
  3. The student must be the sole author of the paper, but faculty guidance is encouraged (if published, additional authors are accepted).
  4. The entry is judged primarily on depth and breadth of knowledge, originality, and the merits of the project results.
  5. The paper may not be submitted for another AIChE award this year.  It is permitted to submit a paper from a previous year if it has not already received an award.

Eligibility criteria:



1. The applicant must hold active membership and participation in the Food, Pharmaceutical and Bioengineering Division of AIChE for at least the last two years.

2. Applicants must have initiated their independent career within 10 years of the application deadline. An independent career is considered to begin at the end of postdoctoral training or the end of Ph.D. studies if postdoctoral training is not pursued. These criteria apply to both academic and industrial applicants.

  • Candidate must be a member of AIChE in good standing and a member of the Separations Division. Active participation in the Separations Division, while not required, will be considered during the selection process.
  • Nomination to include a current resume and/or documentation supporting the individual’s involvement and contributions to the separations disciplines. Nomination to include confirmation of the birth date of the nominee.
  • Nomination deadline to coincide with established deadlines for awards to be presented at the AChE’s fall annual meeting.
  • Current office holders of the Separations Division leadership are eligible for this award, if other criteria are also met.

Nomination Instructions

Nomination procedure and package contents:

•      Full nomination package should consist of a single PDF file that contains all of the following items to be sent to to reddy.karri@psri.orgThis is a one-step process.  Any issues with your nomination will be communicated to the nominator.

1.      Filled nomination form (download Nomination form)

2.      A letter of nomination from the dissertation advisor, must be a current PTF member, should include a critical review stating the value of the dissertation in terms of its originality, significance, and potential applications in the field of particle science and technology. It should also convey how doctoral research contributed to a significant advance or breakthrough in particle technology that will last for a long time. The supporting letters may focus on any of these attributes.

3.      An extended abstract of up to six pages including a list of refereed publications resulting directly from that dissertation.

4.      At least three and no more than four supporting letters (not counting the nomination letter from the dissertation advisor), all of which must be from institutions outside the one granting the dissertation. One of the letters must be from industry. 

5.      If the nominee has previously received any award from AIChE or one of its divisions/forums, an explicit statement of new accomplishments or work over and above those cited for the earlier award(s) must be included (max. of one double spaced page).

This award recognizes an outstanding dissertation by an individual who has earned a doctoral degree. The dissertation can be in any discipline in the physical, biomedical or engineering sciences, with particle science and engineering as its focus.
