Meet Keisha Christian — Featured Student for July

What is your name? Keisha Christian Where are you from? I am originally from Jamaica but currently live in Lake Charles, Louisiana. What school do you go to? What year are you? McNeese State University, junior. Do you hold any positions in your AIChE chapter or with AIChE nationally? President of McNeese AIChE student chapter. Describe an event in your chapter that you are most proud to have been involved with. I am in the process of initiating discussions to formalize a mentorship program between McNeese AIChE and chemical engineers in the local industries. What are your plans after graduation? In what field are you most interested in having an impact? I would like to gain employment in an area that utilizes my background in chemistry and administration, hopefully doing research, scale up processes or consulting. How do you blow off steam and keep your sanity between classes, homework and projects? I just get away from school troubles by "digging in the dirt." I enjoy gardening, I think it is therapeutic. It's great to see the plants thriving and even better and rewarding to enjoy those fruits of my labor.

Which of your undergraduate classes have you most enjoyed? I enjoyed analytical chemistry and food processing when I did my previous bachelors, since doing engineering I like the content of chemical engineering reaction and stage-wise operations.

How did you decide to pursue a degree in ChE? I was a stay-at-home mom and decided to re-tool for the current job market. Having two chemistry degrees and with access to the rich engineering environment in Lake Charles, I decided to study chemical engineering. What is the best kept secret on your campus? The best kept secret is still a secret. What are you most looking forward to after graduation? The BIG celebration! What will you be most saddened to leave behind at school when you move on? A few friends and faculty that I have met. Do you have any advice to incoming students and underclassmen ChEs around the world? Don't limit yourself in what you can achieve. The circumstances might not be ideal, your background might be different, but with a fighting spirit, a creative mind and hard work, success can be yours! How would you like to be involved with AIChE after graduation? I would like to help in facilitating student programs such as mentoring.
