Writing and Submitting a Manuscript

Writing Your Manuscript

Keep in mind as you develop your manuscript that CEP's articles are typically 4 to 6 magazine pages long. This roughly translates 3,200 to 4,800 words, plus tables and artwork. By sending an outline first, CEP editors can advise you if length is likely to be a problem and how to deal with it.  If you have already written a paper that has not been published that you think might be suitable for publication in CEP, feel free to submit it to cepedit@aiche.org for review.

For those developing a manuscript, be sure to alert readers in the first few paragraphs of your draft to the key points that you will be making and the value they will get from reading your article. Provide all background details that are necessary to support your points. Clearly define any limitations and explain any tradeoffs. Do not focus on proprietary products or a case history. Avoid extraneous background details -- for example, on the prior state of the art, or on experimental methodology. Instead, as appropriate, give citations for such information. A bibliography should be included. Limit your citations and bibliography to a moderate number, and cite only publications that are apt to be generally available to readers.

Illustrations can help you make your points effectively, while enhancing the appearance of your article. So, keep good graphics, such as clear drawings and graphs, and sharp photographs, as well as tables and charts, in mind right from the start. Be sure to include a clear, descriptive caption for each illustration.

What to Send

Submit manuscripts electronically as a Microsoft Word file to cepedit@aiche.org or to the appropriate editor [link to editorial contacts]. Make sure to define all nomenclature, including units used (AIChE prefers SI units). If you wish to submit photos, we accept jpg and tif file formats. Please make sure that the resolution is at least 300 dpi. For illustrations (e.g., flow diagrams), CEP’s art department typically redraws them to conform to CEP style. You may submit illustrations embedded within the Word file or in its original file format, provided that a popular software application is used. Please also send one hard copy of the article to:

Copyright Law

AIChE will require a copyright assignment for any articles to be published in CEP. To avoid any problems regarding copyright infringement, submit your draft to only one publication at a time. If the paper has been published or presented previously, let us know so that we can proceed accordingly.
