J. Steven Arendt

Steve Arendt is a Vice President of ABS Consulting Inc. and leads the North American Process Industries sector. He has 30+ years experience in chemical process safety and risk management involving chemical, petrochemical, oil, gas, and related industry processes.



Since 1989, Steve has worked with several industry groups to develop technical positions dealing with OSHA's process safety management regulation (29 CFR 1910.119) and EPA's risk management program rule (40 CFR Part 68). He has been an active participant in these rulemakings, providing testimony at the public hearing for both regulations. Mr. Arendt has served as a moderator for numerous industry workshops on the OSHA PSM and EPA RMP regulations, and is a frequent speaker at conferences involving chemical accident prevention and process safety management activities. Steve has served as expert witness on 50+ PSM compliance matters and has been a frequent instructor and presenter on PSM NEP compliance strategies and issues.



Mr. Arendt is also a widely published author, having over 70 articles, guides, and books to his credit on PSM and risk management topics and has been the contractor on several CCPS book projects including CCPS’s Guidelines for Risk Based Process Safety and API’s/ACC’s Compliance Guide for EPA’s Risk Management Program Rule.



Mr. Arendt was made a CCPS Fellow in 2008 and awarded the 2006 Merit Award from the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center. Mr. Arendt received a Master of Engineering degree from the University of Tennessee in 1977, and is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Tennessee.
