Abstract

By definition, process safety leading indicators are predictive in nature and therefore should have a direct correlation with actual process safety incidents. This paper will present six sigma methodologies to determine if statistical correlations exist among specific leading indicators and actual incidents. The methods presented are: Process map, graphical analysis and sympathetic forecasts, and chi-square test to determine correlation. The leading indicators studied are: Process safety near misses, SIS activation for cause, and PRD activation for cause. API 754 definitions are used in selection of process safety incidents.

Statistical analysis of leading indicators correlated with performance should help a site determine if the correct process safety metrics are being tracked for continuous improvement.
