Chem-E-Car Competition:
Regional Safety responsibilities & Engineering Documentation Package submission instructions

As of February 5, 2010. Watch this page for updates.

Student Teams and Advisors

Student teams and their advisors are asked to demonstrate a commitment to safe planning and practices through several measures. If your school has signed up to compete at one of the nine regional competitions, please review the following documentation and make note of the approaching deadlines.

AIChE Chem-E-Car Competition Documentation for Regional Competitions:

Regional Engineering Documention Package submission instructions

For Spring 2010, each competing team must submit an Engineering Documentation Package (EDP) which includes the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) form, and certify that the team conducted the JSA with an industrial consultant or a University safety official. A new version of the JSA form is available at the link above. Be sure to use the revised version.

Team representatives will submit the Engineering Documentation Package to a SharePoint site, maintained at national AIChE. ONE REPRESENTATIVE per team will have access to the site, using a password and instructions e-mailed to that designated representative.  Information on how to file a EDP will be available on this site in the coming weeks.

NOTE: YOU MUST REGISTER YOUR QUALIFIED CHEM-E-CAR TEAM WITH YOUR REGION'S HOST CHAPTER.  Each regional host has its own deadline and associated fees.  Click here to view the 2010 regional hosts and contacts.

A hard copy of this JSA form with an ORIGINAL advisor signature must be available at the competition site.

Information about safety training sessions and preparation for the regional conferences:

To compete at a regional Chem-E-Car Competition, AIChE student chapters must have satisfactorily completed a recent AIChE-sponsored Chem-E-Car Safety training session.  On March 1, 2010 regional conference host schools will receive the final list of schools that are currently eligible for the Car Competition. If you know your school is currently not qualified to compete, please be sure to review the procedures below before the March 1 deadline.

For ALL teams competing in either Regional or National Competitions:

As of January 2010, there are two ways to qualify to compete on a Chem-E-Car team.  Please see the options below:

  1. LIVE safety training session: This two-hour workshop, coordinated by SACHE (Safety and Chemical Engineering Education) and the Chem-E-Car committee is offered each year at the fall National Student Conference. The last live session was held in Nashville, Tennessee from 8:00-10:00AM on Saturday, November 7 for all potential Chem-E-Car participants.

For those schools that were not able to attend the live safety training session, the online training provides an opportunity to qualify schools to compete at the regional competitions.

  2. ONLINE safety training session: The safety lectures, coordinated by SACHE (Safety and Chemical Engineering Education) and the Chem-E-Car committee are available at the following Chem-E-car page: http://www.aiche.org/Students/Conferences/chemecar/lectures.aspx. Knowledge gained from these lectures will be evaluated via an online test.

Lectures Part 1 and 2 MUST be viewed in their entirety by ALL members of a new Chem-E-Car team or team that has not had training in the past two years.  Within the safety lecture, further instructions will be given about where to access the required test. You MUST watch the video in its entirety to receive these instructions.  Simply watching the video WILL NOT qualify you to compete – each team member must pass the test to complete qualification.  Once you have passed the test, your name will be added to the list of qualifiers maintained at AIChE headquarters.

NOTES:

  • Those schools who attended the safety training in Nashville and/or Philadelphia WILL NOT be required to take this test before regionals. Attending the live session qualified your team to compete in the 2010 regionals.  Please be aware that starting in the Fall of 2010, ALL Chem-E-Car team members competing at the national competition MUST pass the Chem-E-Car test before competing.  If you attended the 2008 and/or 2009 live safety training session and would like to take the test, please e-mail chemecar@aiche.org for further instructions.  You will be required to pass this test every two years to stay qualified to compete on your Chem-E-Car team.
  • Those schools that are qualified to compete due to another team member and advisor/faculty designee attending the live safety training on their behalf, WILL NOT be required to take this test before regionals. Starting in the Fall of 2010, these members MUST view the lecture (link posted above) and pass the required test prior to competing at the 2010 national competition.
  • All new Chem-E-Car advisors/faculty designees who HAVE NOT been through safety training in the past will need to view the lecture and pass the test.  Advisors who attended the live training session in the past will not be required to take the test.
