About the Webinar

The National Alliance for Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts (NAABB) was developed and funded by the Department of Energy to expedite commercialization of algal biofuels and bioproducts. To achieve this goal we have identified barriers to key cost drivers along the algal fuel value chain and have designed a research strategy that leverages fundamental-science capabilities to a focused research effort capable of expediting development of industrially relevant solutions. Rapid deployment of the cost-competitive, environmentally sustainable technologies developed in the consortium will lead to reduced demand for petroleum imports, improved energy security, reduced greenhouse gasses (GHGs), and economic development that will create jobs. The consortium consists of 3 government laboratories, 11 universities, and 13 industrial partners. The focus of this webinar will be to first provide an overview of the cultivation testbeds, harvesting technology development, modeling (life cycle assessment and process), and potential coproducts (animal feed, amino acids, nitrogen based chemicals). Then reactor strategies for increasing productivity will be highlighted. Parameters investigated to date include novel raceway design and the effects of nutrient levels on lipid composition.
