What's New
IEEE calls for participation to develop standards for quantifying ghg emissions from small hydro and wind power projects, and grid baseline conditions.
Read about President Barack Obama’s guidelines for leadership in environmental, energy, and economic performance in Executive Order 13423 issued on October 5, 2009.
Established and new technologies must be applied at unprecedented scale and on an accelerated schedule. Bold actions and substantial investments will be required. This statement outlines the key actions and investments that IEEE-USA thinks are necessary to achieve these goals.
On January 1, 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will, for the first time, require large emitters of heat-trapping emissions to begin collecting greenhouse gas (GHG) data under a new reporting system.
Developing countries can shift to lower-carbon paths while promoting development and reducing poverty, but this depends on financial and technical assistance from high-income countries, saysWorld Development Report 2010: Development and Climate Change.
Spotlight
Veronika Rabl presented an overview of the Initiative and highlighted some of results at the 2010 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting in Minneapolis, July 27, 2010. The presentation was part of the Climate Change Technology Subcommittee & TF P1595 meeting.
The Electric Power and Transportation (4-wheel passenger vehicles) Scorecards are now available for completion. The Scorecards are an approach to identify options that could be implemented in sufficient quantity to provide significant impacts on GHG reduction within the 2020 and 2050 timeframes. The Scorecards employ a simple A, B, C, D and E grading system (similar to that used in many schools). The Attributes rated include items such as GHG reductions, technical issues, cost, environmental issues, social-political issues, risk issues, and timing.
The Gaps and Barriers to Carbon Management Technologies archived webinar is now available online. This summary webinar brought to you by the The Founder Societies: AIChE, AIME, ASCE, ASME, IEEE. It reviewed the outcome of the 2009 Baltimore workshop on Addressing Gaps and Barriers to Lowering Carbon Emissions in Electric Power and Transportation. In this webinar, Dr. Haroon S. Kheshgi, summarized the outcomes of the workshop, and elaborated on the next steps determined for this project 2010.
The workshop was held at the Palomar Hotel Washington, DC in Washinton, DC on February 1-2, 2010. Status updates will provided soon.
The Carbon Measurement workshop was to identify gaps, barriers, educational requirements, etc. that would enable an organization to report accurate, consistent, verifiable, timely, and transparent green house gas values. The workshop was held at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort and Spa at Gainey Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona on December 7-8, 2009. Hosted by the United Engineering Foundation Founders Society. Stay tune for report on the workshop and the plans for next steps.
Workshop on addressing gaps and barriers to lowering carbon emissions in electric power and transportation. The workshop was held on October 21-22, 2009 in Baltimore, Maryland. Hosted by AIChE, AIME, ASME, ASCE, IEEE and supported by the United Engineering Foundation.
Alternative transportation fuels from coal and biomass have the potential to lower greenhouse emissions and petroleum fuel use. The book ‘Liquid Transportation Fuels from Coal and Biomass’ provides a roadmap to energy independence for policy makers, investors, leaders in industry, transportation sector, and others with a concern for the environment, economy, and energy security.
