10xE Challenge - Judging Criteria

The following criteria will be used for selection of the winning design:

  • Intellectual Merit: Ideas should advance knowledge and understanding within its own field or across different fields i.e. ideas display and integrate a diversity of engineering disciplines and industrial sectors. The proposed activity should suggest and explore creative, original, or potentially transformative design that has or is leading toward tangible impact.

The following criteria relate to assessing the transformative nature and impact of entries:

  • Project design: Project should highlight an integrative design approach, one that optimizes the whole of the system as opposed to its subparts.
  • Project energy/resource impact: Project should generate energy and resource savings that are transformational (on the order of 7X to 10X energy or resource savings), not incremental, relative to conventional design or industry average. In addition to the relative savings, absolute savings and replicability are also important.
  • Project economic impact: Project should make economic sense. Energy savings should be achieved at minimally increased (and sometimes at decreased) capital cost, and yield significant operating cost savings.
  • Project implementation: Though conceptual design can be of interest and will be considered, projects that have achieved real-world results will be given greater emphasis.
  • Diversity of engineering disciplines and industrial sectors: 10xE seeks to include case studies across several industries hopefully even interdisciplinary projects, although this summer we will focus on three main ones.
  • Policy Implications - The design promotes sound policy overall, i.e., with net triple bottom line (environmental, economic and social) benefits.
  • Entrepreneurship/ Thought Leadership - The ability to move technologies to the market place, involves issues around intellectual property, venture capital, angels, and entrepreneurship in medium and large companies.
