Topical Conference:
Hydrogen: Technology Advances for the Hydrogen Economy - TC

TC - Topical Sessions
Sponsored by the Nuclear Engineering Division (NED) and Research and Technology Committee (RANTC)

Topical Overview:
This topical explores transition to hydrogen as a primary fuel over the next 50 years and how it could fundamentally transform the U.S. energy system, creating opportunities to increase energy security through the use of a variety of domestic resources for hydrogen production and reducing environmental impacts of carbon dioxide emissions and pollutants in the atmosphere. President Bush, in his 2003 State of the Union address, noted that the U.S.was relying on scientists and engineers to overcome many of the obstacles to the hydrogen economy.  Presently, the U.S. consumes 31% of the world's total oil production, yet possesses only 2% of the world's proven oil reserves. Petroleum imports supply more than 55% of U.S. domestic needs and these imports are projected to increase to more than 68% by 2025. We must reduce our dependence on foreign supplies of energy in a manner that is affordable and preserves environmental quality.  This topical suggests accomplishing this by shifting to a hydrogen-based economy.

You Will Learn About:
