"Green Gas, the Sustainability of LNG"

AIChE Spring Annual Meeting
Orlando, Florida
April 24, 2006

Calvin Cobb

Calvin Cobb, Ph.D.

Chair, AIChE Institute for Sustainability

The advantages of LNG projects and their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower environmental risks, and  provide a platform for the shift to a hydrogen economy will be reviewed.  In addition, the strategic and economic advantages of LNG development, as local natural gas reserves dwindle and limited environmental impact of gas redelivery terminals will be discussed.

In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, natural gas is the lowest emitter of greenhouse gases of all hydrocarbon fuels and increased penetration of the clean fuel source in the power industry can significantly lower Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, as well as other pollutants.

LNG redelivery assets can be further monetized by extending the supply chain into hydrogen production to support industrial hydrogen needs, as well as green power production.  With high crude oil prices tertiary recovery of crude via carbon dioxide injection is becoming more economical.  The carbon dioxide produced from the LNG based hydrogen production can be "sequestered" into oil and we will produce more oil from our ageing oil fields further reducing our energy dependence."
