Organized by the Process Development Division of AIChE - This Gordon-style conference will explore various aspects of this new discipline, and will include both oral and poster presentations. Among the speakers will be several well-known experts from industry and academia. The symposium includes a single, all inclusive registration fee which includes three nights at the hotel plus meals and receptions per conference registrant. As a Gordon-style conference, the symposium will be characterized by immersion in the selected subject matter- chemical product engineering; will include an exhibit featuring a select group of service providers relevant to the conference topic; and built in time for interaction between attendees.
2008 Symposium Description: Industry is experiencing a shift towards the manufacture and sale of high value-added materials marketed on performance rather than compositional specifications. While such high value-added products have historically been identified primarily through experimentation, this has been a costly and time-consuming way to develop innovative new products. Yet today’s global marketplace demands an ever-greater rate of product innovation, forcing many companies to re-examine their approaches to new product development.
While many companies have adapted ways of increasing experimental efficiency, the combinatorial explosion of compositional possibilities will ultimately limit all experimental approaches. This highlights the need for more systematic methods for chemical product development, a field called Chemical Product Engineering. This is a new discipline within chemical engineering, and one that many recognize as chemical engineering’s “third paradigm.”
