TG - The US-Japan Joint Topical Conference on Medical Engineering, Drug Delivery Systems and Therapeutic Systems

This has been organized by the Biotechnology Committee of the Japanese Chemical Engineering Society and the Society for Biological Engineering of AIChE.

This Topical Conference will feature four plenary lectures by the leading chemical/biomedical engineers in their field Dr A. Hoffman, K. Ishihara and Dr. E. Leonard and K. Tojo.  There will be more than 140 podium and poster papers (more than half of them by Japanese investigators). The Conference will offer ample opportunity for scientific interactions between colleagues from all over the world through a series of receptions and other activities.

Topical Overview
Recent advances in medical engineering, medical devices, as well as the discovery and delivery of drugs to cure chronic diseases have been achieved by the combination of chemical engineering principles, intelligent material design and advances in nanotechnology. In particular, there has been considerable work in preparing micro- and nanostructured systems for various applications, such as carriers for controlled and targeted drug delivery, micropatterned devices, medical devices, etc.  In fact, intelligent therapeutics calls for the design of the next generation of responsive devices and materials.    Advanced methods are now used to build biohybrid systems for drug delivery, drug targeting, and tissue engineering devices.  The design of a precise macromolecular chemical architecture that can recognize target molecules from an ensemble of closely related molecules has a large number of potential applications. Why do we observe such explosion in the field now? Electronic devices have now reached a stage of dimensions comparable to those of biological macromolecules. This raises exciting possibilities for combining microelectronics and biotechnology to develop new technologies with unprecedented power and versatility.  Thus, in recent years we have seen an explosion in the field of novel microfabricated and nanofabricated devices.

Conference Proceedings
A complete 2006 Annual Meeting Proceedings CD-ROM will be available for $90 at the conference and may be ordered in advance using the conference registration form. All submitted papers received prior to the pre-conference deadline will be included and where papers are not uploaded, paper proposal abstracts will be used. Following the meeting the price of the CD-ROM will increase and only limited quantities will remain.  A print volume proceedings of all submitted papers and abstracts pertaining only to this Topical is also available for $100 and will be mailed post conference. It will not be available for purchase after the meeting and so it is highly recommended that the print volume be ordered in advance via the registration form.
