Overview:
Good mixing is required in practically every manmade product and yet this unit operation is seldom taught in any undergraduate program. For this reason, mixing is often taken for granted until a process does not work as expected. If a process works on small-scale, then with the proper application of mixing basics, the process should work on any scale. Single phase mixing is usually easy, and most basic mixing courses concentrate on this subject. We will go further into multiphase processes that often show mass transfer limitations. You will learn when a reaction really is kinetically controlled and what to do about it. We will cover the findamentals quickly and focus on advanced topics that are dependent on mixing basics. Applications will remain generic, i.e. gas-liquid, liquid-liquid, and solid-liquid mixing, but examples will range over fermentations, bioreactors, extractions, and mining applications. Any company sending engineers to this course will also receive a $1500 credit toward a follow-up consulting agreement with Dr. Post.
Schedule of what you will learn:
8:30 AM Introductions
8:40 Mixing Basics, Power, Flow, Flow Patterns, Shear Rates, Mixing Times
