Combustion Expert v4
In order to make real improvement to the fuel economy of your process, you need to know the efficiency. Combustion Expert v4 software calculates the fuel efficiency, as well as the furnace efficiency and the over-all-process heat efficiency. It shows you how to adjust fuel and airflow for changes in temperature, barometric pressure and humidity so that the heat dissipated in the furnace remains the same. Using OPC or DDE communication with a PLC, you can see the furnace efficiency in real time, while you receive set points for temperature, mass flowrates or volumetric flowrates based on measured flows, temperatures, gauge pressures, barometric pressure and relative humidity. This new version can determine heating of boxed-shaped objects with radiative heat transfer, calculation of heat transfer coefficients, viewing factors, radiosity , gas emissivity and temperature distribution in bars or slabs. A report generator gives five different reports for heating values, mass balances, furnace losses, heat losses and process summaries.

Combustion Expert 3.2
One of the key benefits of Combustion Expert 3.2 is its ability to perform technical and economic evaluations when converting from oil- to natural-gas-fired furnaces or vice versa. These changes affect the flame temperature, air/fuel ratio, gas emissivity and the radiative heat transfer in the furnace. At higher temperatures, the heat transfer is almost always driven by radiation. These calculations are very cumbersome and difficult to make. However, with this software, these calculations can be done with a click of a mouse in a few seconds. The key to saving fuel is not only keeping records of what was paid/used for energy, which vary with production, energy costs, operating hours and operating conditions, but also knowing the current efficiency of the system.

Comsol Multiphysics Version 3.2
Version 3.2 of COMSOL Multiphysics is a scientific-modeling package whose new features boost productivity throughout the entire modeling and simulation process. The software now reads geometry files created with all major CAD packages (i.e., SolidWorks, Solid Edge, NX, CATIA). Importing an existing CAD or mesh file enables users to bypass the geometry-creation step, which makes the first step in the modeling process fast and convenient. The latest version also introduces COMSOL Script, a standalone product featuring a technical- computing language and command-line modeling. The graphical user interface encourages the use of a consistent system of engineering units. Furthermore, a moving-mesh feature allows a model to simulate moving parts and parametric geometries such as those in MEMS (microelectromechanical systems), piezoelectrics, and biology applications as well as free-surface flow and natural wave effects. Users define the desired type of motion such as for the deflection of a flexible barrier in a strong flow of liquid or gas, or even fluid sloshing in a tank. Coupled with the moving-mesh engine is geometric parameterization, where it is possible to describe a how a geometry changes without the need to set up a loop in a script file. Another key feature of the software is improved solvers handle models with millions of degrees of freedom and calculate the answers faster than ever before.

gPROMS Advanced Model Library for Gas-Liquid Contactors
gPROMS Advanced Model Library for Gas-Liquid Contactors (AML:GLC) is an “open-model” library of high-fidelity, non-equilibrium component models for gas-liquid separation. It is designed to cover a wide range of separation operations, including conventional packed columns for distillation, absorption and evaporation, and more complex units such as heat-integrated devices, partition columns, partial condensers, compact heat and mass exchangers (dephlegmators), and falling-film columns. The approach used in the AML:GLC results in accurate information for decision support in optimization of process, equipment and control design and operations. Accuracy is achieved by using a rate-based approach that employs dual-flow hydrodynamics for estimation of heat and mass transfer, making the assumption of equilibrium only at the infinitesimally thin interface between gas and liquid films. Non-condensibles are handled rigorously in both phases.

FLUENT 6.3
Core solver improvements are the main focus of the recently released FLUENT 6.3 computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. A pressure-based coupled solver joins the existing solver options and improves solution efficiency, as well as convergence and robustness for many cases. Also new are polyhedral meshes, which allow the flexibility of an unstructured mesh to be applied to complex geometries without the overhead associated with a large tetrahedral mesh. The automatic nature of the techniques used to create polyhedral meshes saves the user time, and, since a polyhedral mesh contains many fewer cells than the corresponding tetrahedral mesh, convergence is faster. With FLUENT 6.3,  dynamic mesh capabilities for modeling moving objects, such as impellers in baffled mixing tanks, can now be applied to a series of related steady-state simulations, reducing the amount of time that a user spends on pre-processing. Additional new functionality adds flexibility for simulating complex object motion. Reacting flow simulations benefit from new models for slow chemistry and micromixing. Emissions modeling is more comprehensive through the addition of new SOx and NOx modeling capabilities. Multiphase modeling continues to be an area of focus. The software offers improvements to the accuracy of transient multiphase solutions, as well as enhancements that extend the regimes in which multiphase models can be applied.

PlantTriage
The new visual modeling tools of PlantTriage result in improved dynamic process models. Drag-and-drop modeling allows the user to take test data and drag the model curve to match the actual response curve. The program then finds a dynamic process model that reflects the visually designed response. This model gives optimal proportional-integral- derivative controller (PID) values, simulating responses to upsets and noise. Drag-and-drop modeling is fully compatible with PlantTriage’s Active Model Capture Technology, which automatically tracks operator setpoint moves and incorporates them into the model. The resulting model can then be fine-tuned using the drag-and-drop features.

DynaEIT
DynaEIT is a suite of algorithms designed to solve electrical impedance tomography (EIT) problems. In EIT, the distribution of conductivity inside a container is determined by applying currents (or voltages) at locations along the container surface and measuring the voltages (or currents) at other locations. Equations for the electric field then provide relationships between measured voltages and currents and the conductivity distribution inside the domain. Because different materials have different conductivities, EIT produces a conductivity map that provides an image of the material distribution in the container. The DynaEIT software makes use of both the dipole approximation method and a singular boundary-element method to rapidly solve the “forward” problem of determining voltage and current distributions for a known conductivity distribution in the imaged domain in two and three dimensions. The inverse problem of image reconstruction using the measured voltages and/or currents is solved by multi-dimensional minimization procedures, such as Powell’s direction set method, the downhill simplex method, genetic algorithms and multi-objective minimization based on Pareto sets. These algorithms are suitable for non-destructive evaluation of structures and materials, multi-phase flows in the oil and gas, chemical and energy industries, imaging of container leakage, and detection of chemical reactive flows.
