Steady-State Process Simulator Features New Thermodynamics Component

The steady-state process simulator ProSimPlus now comes with the software component Simulis Thermodynamics. Within the ProSimPlus environment, it is possible to graphically visualize the pure component properties and to calculate phase equilibria or any type of transport and thermodynamic properties on the components of the process. The latest release of ProSimPlus is also CAPE-OPEN compliant, allowing users to integrate third-party CAPE-OPEN unit operations and to create CAPE-OPEN property packages. These property packages gather all thermodynamic elements involved in the process and can be used in other CAPE-OPEN-compliant environments to ensure that consistent data are used throughout the company. The ability to use customized unit operation models was also extended with the addition of Windows Script, which allows users to code, in a simple language (e.g., VBS), calculation modules that will be executed during the simulation. These modules can access the parameters of all the modules and streams of the flowsheet and enable the user to, for example, run complementary calculations, call Excel macros or exchange data with a spreadsheet or a text file. Furthermore, Scriplets — “small” VBS programs — were introduced to provide the user with the ability to plot graphs, exchange simulation files with others users, call Simulis Thermodynamics calculation services, create equipment specification sheets, and more

This Software Can Effectively Simulate Complex Chemistry

The brainchild of Professor Fabian Mauss from the Univ. of Cottbus in Germany, DARS V1.0 is an easy-to-use tool for simulating complex chemistry with complicated kinetic mechanisms in engineering applications. DARS’s reaction reduction capabilities deliver significant times savings compared to computational models. Its Java graphical user interface (GUI) and object-oriented programming result in an intuitive and familiar working environment. Existing links to many of the leading 1D and 3D flow codes ensure that DARS is tailored to complement existing computer-aided-engineering (CAE) toolsets. DARS also provides users with a transparent workbench for developing reactor models, giving access to solver variables.

Software Streamlines Global Chemical Regulatory Management

Working in conjunction with the substance database in the SAP EH&S application, Ariel Expert Rules streamlines the global chemical regulatory management process and reduces the amount of time spent researching, understanding and applying chemical and regulatory information. It can be run against both mixtures and components, and can make determinations using basic data, such as physical-chemical properties, toxicological test results and safety data, in the same way a material safety data sheet (MSDS) author would. The resulting information can automatically populate sections of various MSDSs and other critical documents to help eliminate variations in authoring and ensure that country-specific requirements are met consistently and efficiently. Ariel Expert Rules is based on Ariel Regulatory Content, which encompasses more than 700 searchable chemical lists and more than 60 countries.

Efficiently Manage Maintenance via the Web with this CMMS Solution

The web-browser version of FastMaint, the newly released FastMaint Web CMMS 5.0 is a computerized maintenance management solution (CMMS) that is well-suited for manufacturing plants and other industrial/commercial facilities. Customers have a choice of using a built-in web server or Microsoft’s Internet Information Server. Both planned and preventive maintenance tasks can be scheduled, managed and tracked. An integrated inventory system allows one to track inventory use and schedule the reordering of parts. Maintenance managers can plan ahead and budget work for the week, month, quarter, year or any defined period. Work orders can be easily created, while feedback on completed jobs can be collected efficiently. FastMaint Web also integrates work request management. Users’ rights to view or change information can be restricted to protect maintenance data.

Gain a Clearer Picture of Fluid Piping Systems with this Software

The companion software to Crane’s Technical Paper 410, Flow of Fluids Premium simulates the operation of small piping systems. It calculates results for series, branched and looped systems — whether opened or closed — for up to 25 pipelines. The program boasts the ability to select pumps directly from over 85 electronic pump catalogs. Key enhancements include new visual features, such as the option of creating piping system models as 2-D or isometric drawings, and a new Shape Editor that enables users to create custom shapes for pumps, tanks, components and control valves. Other highlights include the ability to copy and paste between piping system models, size a flowmeter or balancing orifice and insert it into the piping system in a single step, and view results instantly using the new AutoCalc feature.
