LEADING COSMETICS COMPANIES LAUNCH SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING ROUNDTABLE
AIChE’s Institute for Sustainability has announced the creation of the Sustainable Packaging Cosmetics Roundtable. The goal of the roundtable is to enhance the ability of its members to make their own individual choices as to how to interact with suppliers, retailers and consumers with respect to sustainable packaging. Inaugural members include Avon Products, Inc.; Chanel, Inc.; Coty, Inc.; The L’Oreal Group, Mast Global Beauty & Home, and The Estee Lauder Companies.
SOCIETY FOR BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING ANNOUNCES 6TH ICBN CONFERENCE
AIChE’s Society for Biological Engineering and Singapore’s Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) have partnered to organize the 6th International Conference on Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (ICBN), which will be held from June 24 to 27 in Berkeley, California. The event is being co-chaired by Luke Lee of the University of California, Berkeley, and Matthew Tirrell of the University of Chicago. This year’s meeting has a special focus on "Bionanoscience and Bioengineering for Translational Medicine."

AIChE RELAUNCHES PUBLIC COURSES AND IN-HOUSE TRAINING
AIChE, which last year launched a new series of online learning courses, will, beginning this July, again offer instructor-led public courses at sites around the country. These courses, and other content, will also be available for customized, in-company presentation. While some of these courses have been offered through the America Society of Mechanical Engineers for the last few years, AIChE’s leadership decided to begin administering live, face-to-face learning again to assure top-quality and consistent chemical engineering content across all delivery channels and platforms.
SBE Announces Inaugural Winners of Wang Award
AIChE’s Society for Biological Engineering (SBE) has announced the inaugural winners of the D. I. C. Wang Award for Excellence in Biochemical Engineering. The inaugural recipients of the award, established in appreciation of Professor Daniel I.C. Wang of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), are Noubar Afeyan of Flagship Ventures and James Swartz of Stanford University.

Chemical Engineers Gather in Houston in April to Discuss Energy, Safety
AIChE will hold its Spring Meeting and 8th Global Congress on Process Safety, in Houston from April 1-5. Much of the meeting will focus on energy solutions and advancements in safety. Nearly 2,000 chemical engineers are expected at the Hilton-Americas and the George R. Brown Convention Center for the conference. On Monday, April 2, Michael J. Dolan, senior vice president of ExxonMobil Corporation, will deliver the meeting’s keynote address. Dolan’s speech, “Process Safety and Corporate Responsibility,” ties together safety and sustainability, two of the major topics of the Spring Meeting.

SBE Announces 3rd International Conference on Stem Cell Engineering
AIChE’s Society for Biological Engineering (SBE) and the International Society for Stem Cell Research are partnering as hosts for the 3rd International Conference on Stem Cell Engineering, which will be held from April 29 to May 2, 2012 at the Sheraton Downtown in Seattle. The meeting is designed to accelerate the generation of cells for tissue regeneration and other stem-cell-based therapies.

AIChE Spring Meeting to Spotlight Energy and Safety
AIChE’s 2012 Spring Meeting and 8th Global Congress on Process Safety will draw nearly 2,000 chemical engineers to Houston’s Hilton-Americas Hotel and the George R. Brown Convention Center from April 1 to 5. The meeting will feature a keynote address from Michael J. Dolan, senior vice president of ExxonMobil; topical conferences on ethylene production, gas utilization, and more; and hundreds of technical papers.

AIChE Names Harold New Editor of AIChE Journal
AIChE announced that Michael P. Harold, M.D. Anderson Professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of Houston, will become editor of the AIChE Journal, its flagship research and development publication. Harold will replace Stanley I. Sandler, who is retiring with the December issue after more than 10 years in that position.

AIChE Names New Officers and Board Members for 2012
AIChE announced that David A. Rosenthal, reliability delivery and assets management manager for Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc., in Houston, Texas, will become president of the 40,000 member organization in 2012. Rosenthal succeeds 2011 President Maria K. Burka, program director in the Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental and Transport Systems Division of the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Virginia. Joining him on the Board of Directors will be Phillip R. Westmoreland, who will serve as president-elect in 2012 and as president in 2013.
In a ceremony on October 16 during its Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, AIChE presented Board of Directors and Institute awards to 14 leaders and innovators in chemical engineering.
AIChE is holding its Annual Meeting in the Minneapolis Convention Center from October 16th to 21st with lectures and sessions focused on energy, water supply and quality, sustainability, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. More than 5,000 engineers and students from around the world are expected.
Alternative Fuel-powered Cars Race at 13th Annual Chem-E-Car Competition
On October 16, AIChE announced that the University of Puerto Rico – Mayaguez took top honors at the international Chem-E-Car Competition at its Annual Meeting. The team’s car, “CoKi Stroj” used pneumatic pressure to run and a color-changing reaction to stop. Coki Stroj defeated 31 other shoebox-sized cars bedecked with cougars, tiger tails and school logos.

Society for Biological Engineering Introduces First Conference on Electrofuels Research
In an effort to expand and accelerate the investigation of novel sources of alternative energy, the Society for Biological Engineering is sponsoring a new conference series on Electrofuels Research. The inaugural meeting will be held November 6th to 9th at the Biltmore Hotel in Providence, Rhode Island, and will be chaired by Greg Stephanopoulos of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
AIChE’s Annual Meeting Highlights Energy, Water Sustainability and Bioengineering Advances
AIChE’s Annual Meeting is expected to draw more than 5,000 engineers and undergraduate engineering students with plenary lectures, 13 topical conferences, more than 750 technical sessions and special events. Scheduled for October 16 to 21 at the Minneapolis Convention Center, the meeting will also include the Chem-E-Car Competition, which feature teams from colleges across the country racing small cars powered by alternative fuels that the students have created. Another feature will be the second International Congress on Energy.

AIChE Launches New Upstream Engineering and Flow Assurance Forum
AIChE announced the launch of an Upstream Engineering and Flow Assurance Forum in conjunction with the opening of the Offshore Technology Conference, of which it is a sponsoring organization. According to AIChE President-Elect David Rosenthal, who helped form the group, the new upstream forum “will provide a ‘meeting place’ for engineers, scientists and technologists who work in developing and producing critical natural resources, like oil and natural gas.”

The First Middle East Process Engineering Conference and Exhibition (MEPEC) is scheduled for October 23 to 26 at the Gulf International Convention Center in Manama, Bahrain. Organized by AIChE’s Saudi Arabian Section and the Bahrain Society of Engineers, the meeting will offer practical approaches to performance and innovations in the process industries, particularly upstream and downstream activities in oil, gas and petrochemicals. May 31 is the deadline for submitting an abstract.
AIChE and DECHEMA, the German Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, are co-sponsoring the first Global Conference on Energy Sustainability in the Process Industries from June 5 to 8 at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Sessions will define research needs, examine recent technical advances, and discuss strategies for implementing energy-saving solutions across a range of industries: electronics, automotive, chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology. Speakers from China, Denmark, Germany, India, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands and the U.S. are among those scheduled. AIChE members receive a registration discount. An early-registration discount applies through May 2.

Chemical Engineers Discuss Sustainable Energy and Water Supplies

Engineers Forum on Sustainability Build Online Platform for Interdisciplinary Exchange
To facilitate collaboration across borders—both national and disciplinary ones—the Engineers Forum on Sustainability has launched a new web site, http://efs.aiche.org. The site uses the latest communications technologies, including social media, to improve the dissemination of information on sustainable development. Its development was underwritten by a grant from the United Engineering Foundation.

AIChE Launches Water Initiative
The increasing importance of issues surrounding water supplies and their sustainability has led AIChE to launch a new water initiative. The initial focus will be on determining the optimal roles and approaches for chemical engineers addressing water access, purification and sanitation, and the “water-energy nexus,” the relationship between the energy footprint of water and the water footprint of energy. David Klanecky of Dow Water & Process Solutions and Wendy Young of GE Water & Process Technologies are co-chairing the initiative’s advisory board.

AIChE Names New Officers and New Board Members for 2011AIChE announced that Maria K. Burka will become its president in 2011. She is the second woman to hold the presidency since AIChE’s founding in 1908. Burka succeeds 2010 President Henry T. “Hank” Kohlbrand. Joining Burka on the Board of Directors will be David A. Rosenthal, who will serve as president-elect in 2011 and as president in 2012, and Andre R. Da Costa, who will begin a three-year term as treasurer. Also newly elected to three year terms as directors were: T. Bond Calloway, Jr., Karl V. Jacob, Freeman Self, and Katherine S. Ziemer.
In a ceremony on November 8 during its Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, AIChE presented its new Engineering & Construction Award to Marathon Petroleum Company for the successful design and construction of the addition to its Garyville, Louisiana, refinery. The Garyville project, the largest-ever refinery project in the U.S. and the largest private-sector project in Louisiana’s history, was completed in 37 months, despite numerous challenges, including two hurricanes.
AIChE Honors Dow Chemical Company Team for R&D Achievement
In a ceremony on November 8 during its Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, AIChE presented its inaugural Industrial Research & Development Award to the “Shuttle Crew” at the Dow Chemical Company’s Freeport, Texas, facility. The team was honored for discovering a new mechanism for polymerization and creating unique new polymers.
AIChE Honors S. Shariq Yosufzai with Inaugural Industrial Leadership Award
In a ceremony on November 8 during its Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, AIChE presented its inaugural Industrial Leadership Award to the S. Shariq Yosufzai, vice president, Chevron Corporation. Yosufzai received the award for his leadership over the past 35 years and for creating 3 start-up companies in a Fortune 15 company.
AIChE Honors Bristol-Myers Squibb with New Process Operations Award
In a ceremony on November 8 during its Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, AIChE presented its new Process Operations Award to the Bristol-Myers Squibb – Process and Development. The group was honored for its efforts in implementing “recipe” control in pharmaceutical process development.
AIChE Honors UOP-ENI with Sustainable Energy Award
In a ceremony on November 8 during its Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, AIChE presented its second annual Sustainable Energy Award to the UOP-ENI Biologically-based fuels team. The team received the award for its approach to producing diesel and jet fuels from a broad range of biomaterials.
Society for Biological Engineering Honors Harvey Blanch
AIChE’s Society for Biological Engineering (SBE) has awarded the 2010 James E. Bailey Award to Dr. Harvey Blanch for research in transport, kinetics, and thermodynamics in enzymatic and microbial processes in ways that have advanced the development of biofuels. Blanch is the Merck Professor of Biochemical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley.

SBE Advances“Web-Lab” Initiative
AIChE’s Society for Biological Engineering (SBE) recently launched a Web-Lab initiative that aims to web-enable laboratory experiments. Working under a grant from the United Engineering Foundation and in cooperation with several universities and engineering societies, the initiative is developing tools that could enhance undergraduate education. The long-term goal is to provide more students with access to the best modern laboratory experience, while reducing the cost per student for the delivery of state-of-the-art laboratory exercises.

AIChE AND CSChE EXPLORE SAFE SITING OF LNG FACILITIES
In a search for “cleaner” replacements for petroleum, several new liquid natural gas (LNG) terminals have come on-line in North America. However, applications for additional LNG facilities face serious challenges from communities concerned about safety. In response, members of AIChE and the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE) have identified issues that merit priority consideration when siting LNG terminals. These findings were developed from presentations at their second joint conference on LNG, held last summer in Montreal.
AIChE LAUNCHES CENTER FOR ENERGY INITIATIVES
The Board of Directors of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) has approved the formation of a Center for Energy Initiatives. In announcing the Center, AIChE President Henry "Hank" T. Kohlbrand said: "AIChE members are already working on energy-related issues from multiple perspectives. The new Center will help us network and 'cross-fertilize' and integrate ideas that can advance energy efforts across the board." Kohlbrand reported that one of the Center s first activities will be conducting the First International Congress on Energy: Sustaining Supplies. The Congress will run in conjunction with AIChE s Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah, this November 7-12.

DOMACH WILL SUCCEED TO EDITORSHIP OF BIOTECHNOLOGY PROGRESS
AIChE has named Michael Domach, professor of chemical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, associate editor of Biotechnology Progress, a journal published on its behalf by Wiley-Blackwell. Domach will succeed to the editorship after a period of transition with Jerome Schultz, chair of the Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, Riverside, who has edited Biotechnology Progress since 1989.

AIChE JOINS TAPPI TO COSPONSOR BIOPRO EXPO 2010
AIChE has signed on as a cosponsor for BioPro Expo, which is organized by the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI). BioPro Expo will be held from August 24th to 26th at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta, Georgia. Similarly, TAPPI will become a co-sponsor of AIChE's 2010 Annual Meeting, with special interest in the programming of AIChE's Forest Bioproducts Division. US EPA & AIChE PARTNER TO CELEBRATE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF EARTH DAY
AIChE and its Institute for Sustainability are working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the 6th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo, which will be held in conjunction with events marking the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day. The expo, to be held on April 24th and 25th on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., will showcase the work of innovative engineers, scientists and business leaders who are committed to economic growth, while reducing environmental impact. The expo will also host the presentation of awards to winners of EPA s sustainable design competition for college students, P3 People, Prosperity and the Planet.
SBE HOLDS 2ND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON STEM CELL ENGINEERING
AIChE s Society for Biological Engineering (SBE) has organized its Second International Conference on Stem Cell Engineering. The conference, which runs from May 2nd to 5th at the Hyatt Harborside Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts, will bring together bioengineers with stem cell scientists to focus on the ways in which basic research, applied science, and engineering can be optimally combined to impact healthcare. Co-chaired by Peter Zandstra of the University of Toronto and George Daley of Children s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, the conference is co-sponsored by the International Society for Stem Cell Research.
CCPS JOINS SAFETY ENGINEERS, OSHA, TO PROMOTE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY & HEALTH WEEK
AIChE s Center for Chemical Process Safety is joining thousands of people and businesses, including members of the American Society of Safety Engineers, the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, and the US Department of Labor s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, in celebrating North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. This year s observance of the annual event, which raises awareness of the importance of safety at work, will be from May 2 to 8. NAOSH Week kick-off events in Washington, D.C., will be held May 2 and 3 at the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Capitol, the Smithsonian and the National Zoo.

AIChE MEETING ADDRESSES ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES
Chemical engineers are focused on seeking solutions to the technical and economic issues facing the world, from alternative energy and carbon management, to water treatment and purification. Those issues will be among the topics featured at this year s Spring Meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, being held here from March 21-25. AIChE MEMBER NAMED "NEW FACE OF ENGINEERING"
Michael Pepera, a process engineer for CH2M Hill in Bellingham, Washington, has been named one of the New Faces of Engineering for 2010 by The National Engineers Week Foundation. Part of the National Engineers Week celebration, observed from February 14-20, New Faces of Engineering highlights the work of young engineers and their impact on society. Pepera recently was the lead Programmable Logic Controller on the Round Butte Selective Water Withdrawal project, a first-of-its-kind fish collector that will help to restore the natural salmon run in Oregon s Deschutes River.

SOCIETY FOR BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING PRESENTS FIRST-EVER SERVICE AWARDS
The Society for Biological Engineering (SBE), a technological community within AIChE, has awarded its first service awards to Drs. Wei-Shou Hu, a professor at the University of Minnesota, and Miranda Yap, executive director of the Bioprocessing Technology Institute in Singapore. Both Yap and Hu have served on the society's Advisory Board since its founding in 2004. They have also been the lead researchers on its consortium to develop genomic information for the Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cell line, which is used in the production of about 70 percent of today's therapeutic protein drugs.

AIChE has announced that Maria K. DEBORAH GRUBBE APPOINTED CHAIR OF INSTIUTE FOR SUSTAINABILITY
The Institute for Sustainability (IfS), a technological community within AIChE, has announced that Deborah L. Grubbe has been appointed its 2010 chair. Commenting on her appointment, Grubbe said that advancing the use of sustainability concepts, tools and measurements is critical to meeting both business s interests and society's needs. Grubbe is owner and president of Operations and Safety Solutions, LLC, a consulting firm. She is the former vice president of group safety for BP plc, and earlier spent 27 years with DuPont, where she held corporate director positions in safety, operations and engineering.

AIChE HONORS EXCEPTIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS WITH 2009 AWARDS
In a ceremony during its Annual Meeting in Nashville on November 8, AIChE presented awards to 14 leaders and innovators in the chemical engineering field.
This year marked the presentation of the first-ever Sustainable Energy Award, which recognizes individuals, teams or companies who have made significant contribution toward alternative energy development, generation and use. Genencor, a division of Danisco, received the award in recognition of the creation and commercialization of Accellerase, an enzyme which reliably hydrolyzes biomass, advancing the biorefinery industry and second generation ethanol innovation.
SOCIETY FOR BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING HONORS JAMES LIAO
AIChE's Society for Biological Engineering (SBE) has awarded its fifth annual James E. Bailey Award to Dr. James C. Liao for advances in metabolic research. Liao is the Chancellor s Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has made major contributions to biochemical engineering with his theoretical and his experimental work, and has an international reputation that extends well beyond the chemical engineering community.
ALTERNATIVE FUEL-POWERED CARS RACE AT 11TH ANNUAL AIChE CHEM-E-CAR COMPETITION
AIChE announced that Northeastern University took top honors at the national Chem-E-Car competition in Nashville on Sunday, November 8, at the Institute's Annual Meeting. The team's car, The Aluminator, was powered by a hydrogen fuel cell stack where gas created on the car is fed to stack producing electric power that turns the motor. The Aluminator defeated 30 other shoebox-size cars.
CENTER FOR CHEMICAL PROCESS SAFETY LAUNCHES BENCHMARKING PROGRAM FOR PROCESS SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
As it approaches its 25th Anniversary, AIChE's Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) has announced a partnership with Phillip Townsend and Associates (PTAI) to establish a program of formal benchmarking in process safety in the chemical, energy and pharmaceutical industries. Participating companies will compare their process safety programs and performance in an effort to identify best practices and drive process safety improvement across the board. The program will build on CCPS's series of process safety guidelines and metrics.

AIChE's 2009 Annual Meeting, from November 8-13 at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, is expected to draw more than 4,000 engineers, scientists, and undergraduate engineering students with more than 700 technical sessions, plus plenary lectures and other special events. The national Chem-E-Car Competition will feature college teams from across the country racing small cars powered by alternative fuels created by students. Presentations include looks at all energy options, from biofuels, to energy efficiency, to the possible expansion of nuclear energy, to clean-coal technology, for better managing carbon emissions. CHEMICAL SAFETY BOARD ASKS AIChE TO AID EDUCATION OF STUDENTS ON CHEMICAL REACTIVITY
The U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) has asked AIChE to help educate chemical engineering students about reactive chemical safety. The CSB recommendations followed its investigation of an explosion caused by a runaway reaction at a Jacksonville, Fla., company that killed four employees. As this tragedy emphasizes, chemical engineering students should learn more about process safety and about chemical reactivity, in particular, said Scott Berger, Executive Director of AIChE's Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS). Berger noted that CCPS's Safety in Chemical Engineering Education program produces materials for universities and offers students a process safety certificate program.

ENGINEERING SOCIETIES JOIN FORCES TO MANAGE CARBON EMISSIONS
For the past year, leaders of five societies, led by AIChE, have been meeting to identify steps the country might take toward managing carbon emissions, a key issue in climate change discussions, should that become public policy. Funded by the United Engineering Foundation, the group, which also includes AIME, ASCE, ASME and IEEE, has developed a web site for collaboration and scorecards for benchmarking carbon management alternatives.

SOCIETY FOR BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING NAMES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Society for Biological Engineering (SBE), a technological community within the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, has named Miriam Cortes-Caminero as its new executive director. She succeeds June Wispelwey, who became executive director of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in January. Cortes-Caminero is a biochemist and pharmacologist with international experience in sales and marketing and product management in the bio-pharmaceutical field.

ENGINEERING SOCIETY LEADERS GATHER IN AUGUSTA
Engineering professionals from around the country will converge on Augusta for the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE's) 2009 Leadership Development Conference from June 12-14 at the Augusta Marriott Hotel & Suites. Hosted by the Central Savannah River Local Section, the conference is designed to equip volunteer leaders with the knowledge, relationships and motivation to effectively lead AIChE members in their geographic location or technical specialty. Attendees share best practices and acquire and hone communication skills, management techniques and other career-building skills.

AIChE SUPPORTS EDUCTIONAL INITIATIVES TO DEVELOP THE NEXT GENERATION OF ENGINEERS
The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) announced a variety of initiatives that encourage students to learn more about the rewards of an engineering career, and spotlight the engineering innovations that make our life easier. As part of National Engineers Week, observed this year from February 15-21, AIChE is encouraging students to think about a career in engineering where they can find solutions to real-world problems if they are committed to improving their math and science skills.

AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERS NAMES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) announced that June Wispelwey, currently executive director of the Society for Biological Engineering (SBE), a technical community within AIChE, will become executive director of the parent organization. Wispelwey will replace John A. Sofranko, who is retiring in January, 2009, after 8 years in that position.

CHEMICAL ENGINEERS WARN THAT NATION OVERLOOKS OBSTACLE TO WIDESPREAD USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY
While the United States searches for ways to use more renewable resources in electric power generation, too little attention is being paid to developing innovative, large ways to store this energy. A new white paper published by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) says the intermittent and highly variable nature of solar and wind power, as generated, requires massive storage technology to convert it to steady and dispatchable power for the nation's power grid.

AIChE AND INDIAN INSTITUTE OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERS (IIChE) AGREE TO COLLABORATE
On April 9, 2008, AIChE signed a collaboration agreement with the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE). IIChE, which this year is celebrating its 60th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary, has nearly 20,000 members among the Indian academic and industrial community.

AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERS PUBLISHES INAUGURAL SUSTAINABILITY INDEX
AIChE, through its Institute for Sustainability, has published a new Sustainability Index that assesses sustainability of the chemical industry. The AIChE Sustainability Index(sm) is an important tool that can help chemical companies benchmark their sustainability performance in many important areas against a group of their peers, said Calvin Cobb, chair of the Index s Advisory Board and former president of Wright Killen & Company. Our research shows that larger companies, and those with brands well known to consumers, tend to receive greater stakeholder pressure to commit themselves to broad and aggressive sustainability goals, and we want to provide tools to guide them down that road.
